The fastest lap, at the right moment
In qualifying, the objective is a lap time, not distance covered. The driver must find space on track and prepare the tyres. A fast lap can be compromised by traffic, an error or a flag requiring the driver to slow down.
The 22-car format
In the 2026 format, Q1 lasts 18 minutes and eliminates six drivers. Q2 lasts 15 minutes and eliminates another six. The remaining ten enter Q3, a 13-minute session for the leading grid positions. Times do not carry over between stages.
Pole position does not guarantee victory
Pole position is the first position established through qualifying, subject to the applicable rules and penalties. Sanctions may change the grid, while the race has other demands: the start, stint pace, tyre management and pit stops.
Sprint Qualifying is separate
Sprint Qualifying uses shorter sessions: 12 minutes for SQ1, 10 for SQ2 and 8 for SQ3. These determine the Sprint grid. Grand Prix qualifying determines the grid for the main race.
